In January 2024, Brett Fukuda joined our Kaulele Work-Study Program to pursue his passion for the aviation industry. Born and raised in Hawaii, Brett graduated from Mililani High School in 2021 and is pursuing a career as a commercial airline pilot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did you become interested in aviation?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have a lot of family members who work in aviation. Several of my uncles are pilots for Hawaiian Airlines, and my mom is a Hawaiian Airlines flight attendant. I\u2019ve been around aviation my entire life, and I really like to travel. My career plan naturally led toward becoming a commercial airline pilot. My favorite destinations so far have been Japan and Australia.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

What are your responsibilities as an intern?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I work Monday \u2013 Friday at the Goldwings aeronautical parts store located at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport\u2019s South Ramp. I assist the parts manager, help customers, organize the store, and support airfield lighting sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What have you enjoyed the most?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have completed my ADB Airfield Lighting Introduction and Theory of Operations training. I\u2019ve enjoyed experiencing a whole other side of the aviation business and talking with mechanics to better understand their perspective and learn more about each aircraft. We\u2019ve also had several field missions, where we have looked at lighting on site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve also learned how to communicate with customers and provide high-quality, professional customer service. The internship requires that I take in a lot of information and help where I can. It\u2019s nice to be able to do my part and ask questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What\u2019s next for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After I wrap up the internship at the end of the summer, I plan to return to flight school in Washington state. I\u2019ve already earned more than 100 flight hours toward my private pilot\u2019s license.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>

What are some of your hobbies outside of aviation?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I go to the gym every day, and I recently started golfing. I also enjoy fishing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
